Ayurveda, meaning “the science of life”, is the world’s most ancient and holistic health system. It is based on three supporting pillars: diet, sleep, and sex. During my time here in Kerala I will be focusing on the dietary aspect of Ayurveda. The foods we eat have a huge effect on our physical and mental health.
The first thing I learned about Ayurveda is the tridosha concept (your unique constitution), which is essential to understanding the ayurvedic diet. The three ayurvedic doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha, each with a specific set of characteristics. The best way to determine your dosha is by seeing an ayurvedic health practitioner, but or a quicker result you can take an online questionnaire which will help you determine your predominant dosha.
“What is food to one man is bitter poison to others.”
The food we eat has the power to bring your health into perfect balance, as well as completely destroy you. Understanding which foods, spices, and herbs are complimentary to your dosha will help you choose an ideal diet for a lifetime of physical health and mental balance.
So, without further adieu, complete the questionnaire (if you haven’t already) and add up the score to see which one or two doshas are predominant in you.and your nutrition for each of the doshas.
